Getting Training

Getting training for your career can be done in several ways. The list below is specifically for Computer Science, Data Analytics, IT & Networking fields. But other careers have similar options for training such as technical schools, colleges and Universities.

Training Methods

Once you have picked a career path you need to get training. There are many ways to get training on technology. Some of the more common ways are:

  • Self study - Books, videos, online courses, tutorials, etc.
  • Bootcamps - Intensive short term training programs.
  • College or University - 2 year or 4 year degrees.
  • Certifications - Industry recognized certifications.
  • Apprenticeships - Learning on the job with a mentor.

The best way to get training depends on your learning style, budget, and time available. Some people learn better with structured programs like college or bootcamps. Others prefer self study and learning at their own pace.

Consider your options and choose the one that best fits your needs and goals.

Personal Experience

We make this career advice generic for any field, but my degree is in Computer Science so some of the career advice will be targeted toward software engineering.

Getting training in software engineering is often done at a University. You can also do Bootcamps or self-study as these are also valid ways to learn programming.

Certifications and Apprenticeships target IT hardware and networking fields where employers prefer you have the knowledge and passed certifications to prove you have the knowledge.

Whether you choose software engineering or IT they both can take significant time and effort to get proficient in your skills.
