Career Training

Managing your career is an important skill. It is not usually taught in school so we cover it here. We will go over the main steps in managing your career.

The main steps are:

  1. Deciding which career to pursue.
  2. Planning your career.
  3. Getting training.
  4. Finding a job.
  5. Managing your career.
  6. Late stage career.
  7. Financial management - Retirement and investing.
  8. Outside interests - Hobbies and fun.

We will cover each of these steps in more detail. Each step is important in managing your career successfully.

Deciding Which Career to Pursue

Choosing a career is a difficult choice. Especially right now With generative AI coming out and AI in general handling jobs that used to be done by humans. There have been a lot of layoffs in the tech field as a result.

So now I am suggesting if you are either in college or soon to be in college pick a less technical field. Careers like Civil Engineering, Health Care, Construction, Trades, etc. These jobs tend to last longer and have less stress involved.

If you still want a technical career such as Software Engineering, Project Management, QA Testing, Data Analytics, AI Developer, etc. then check the job trend numbers on the internet and see which tech jobs are popular and hiring; then get training on one of those career paths. This will set you up with the best chance of getting a career in tech.

Deciding which career to choose is up to you, but it has become increasingly hard since AI is now taking over human jobs. So choosing a resilient career path is now an important consideration.

A Note on Hiring

A lot has changed in hiring in the past few years with AI tools now assessing candidates abilities. I went through an AI phone screen for one company and a HireVue interview, which uses AI to assess your problem solving skills and how you answer the questions. For better or worse AI is being used as a tool to screen candidates abilities.

Finding a job on the job boards is almost impossible due to the AI filters and automated matching going on in the background. It seems to be ruling out otherwise well qualified canidates. I didn't have any success finding a job from job boards.

We are suggesting you approach finding a job locally. Apply directly on company websites for local companies. Then follow up with the HR email on their website or in person with a phone call. You will have a better chance getting an interview with this method.
